Shadia Family Latrine
Beyond Uganda exists to meet the needs of the most vulnerable children in Eastern Uganda. Many of these children are not able to ever attend school due to lack of funds or support but are not even eligible for any global sponsorship program because they are above age, totally orphaned or handicapped. These are the very children that we seek to take on and make sure that EVERY child, regardless of their circumstances has an opportunity at the basics of life: safe home, food & clean water & an education. In 2015, Shadia was brought into the program as she was totally orphaned and in the care of her grandmother. Over the years the grandmother took in two other grandchildren when their parents died so was now caring for 3 children and her health was failing. During a routine BU home visit, we found that the home was in really bad shape with no form of bathing or toilet area making it very unhealthy. There was also a lack of food on a regular basis because of no income from the ailing grandmother so BU immediately stepped in and took all 3 children into our program enabling them to go to boarding school with regular meals and safe living conditions. Meanwhile, our staff worked with the grandmother to mend the home, get medication and we now give a monthly food package to make sure that she (and the kids on holiday visits from school) have adequate food in the home. The last remaining item to help this family was a proper latrine bathroom and this was out of our budget so we just prayed that God would provide. It was remarkably quick that we received two checks from the Community Fellowship Deaf Ministry and the Broyles Family (sponsors of all 3 children in the home) that completely paid for the latrine. Many of the kids from the BU program were on school holiday and came to help with the project and be a part of this exciting event for the family. As you can see from the pictures the structure now has two bathrooms (one for girls and one for boys) and the third stall is the shower area. This will give them not only a healthy place for their personal needs but also give them back their privacy and dignity. Thank you so much for stepping up and stepping into the story of this family and making a forever difference.
