Japoyi Famiy Home

Japoyi Famiy Home

In early December the Japoyi home underwent a life-changing tragedy. Japoyi came home from boarding school to learn that after a failed attempt to kill his mother, his father had taken his own life inside their family hut. As in Ugandan culture, since the father took his life in the home, the home and all it held was burnt to the ground. This left them homeless right before the long holiday from school and the Christmas season. They moved into a smaller neighboring hut that was being used as a kitchen while we shared the news of the tragedy with Patrick's sponsor family. We were beyond grateful when they decided to step into this situation and begin to rewrite this family's story by providing a new permanent home for Japoyi and his family. Since then the BU staff on the ground have been working with Japoyi's mother and the builders to complete a three bedroom brick home. Our recent team was able to visit the home and pray with the mother. The home is near completion and should be done by the end of April, just in time for Easter!

Your generosity provided not only a safe shelter for living, but a place to cultivate community and practice the culture of hospitality. Mama Japoyi is so thankful for your heart of giving and expressed her gratitude to us on our recent visit. We were able to pray with her and dedicate her new home and now Japoyi will be able to return home from school to his very own room for the first time in his life.

"Hospitality in Africa is more than just entertaining a guest. It is a deeply ingrained value in the African worldview, practiced in every social, economic, political, and religious structure of a community. Hospitality gives the community its identity. It is an ethical duty, a way of life."
